Eating healthy is something many people are trying these days. It’s not always easy (especially when you are doing something fun). Summer parties, birthday parties, weddings and everything in between usually serve food that aren’t the best for your health. That’s one reason why I love tailgating. Even if there are several people that want several different things, it’s really easy to satisfy them all by simply throwing it on the grill.
If you want to eat healthy and show your heart some love, I have a heart healthy recipe for you. Shish Kabobs are great on the grill and delicious too! They can be as simple or elaborate as you want. I simply washed and chopped some bell peppers (green, red & yellow), zucchini squash, grape tomatoes and chicken.
Now I have some tips for you – these are tips I found after I made my Shish Kabobs. Make sure you soak your skewers in water for 30 minutes prior to sticking your meat and veggies on them. This will prevent fire (luckily, we had no fire). Marinade and season your meat and veggies before you stick them on the skewers (if you forget, they still taste fine when you do it while they are on the grill). Once you do all that, you’re good to go. I didn’t worry about making them pretty; however, they were wonderfully colorful looking.
I individually wrapped our Shish Kabobs in foil (with no marinade). My hubby started up the grill and got them on there. This was our test run for tailgating on Father’s Day. While they were grilling with foil on, that is when I found all those helpful hints I gave you earlier in the post.
Once our Shish Kabobs cooked for a bit with the foil on, we unwrapped them and let them grill naked. Then I grabbed some teriyaki sauce and just splashed it everywhere (yes, I made a mess). The nice looking New York steak was for the hubby on Father’s Day. He still enjoyed the Shish Kabobs but, hey, a man needs his steak on Father’s Day.
It ended up being an amazing day. The sun was shining and it was a perfect day to grill up some food on the tailgate. You can get all of these yummy ingredients at Save Mart stores. I have a lot of fun shopping there because of their great variety. Save Mart is gearing up for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 Race in Sonoma, California. The race takes place on June 23, 2013. For more information, you can visit the Race Sonoma website. Be sure to like Save Mart on Facebook and follow them on Twitter to stay up on the latest news and promotions.
