Five Fun Family Vacations Activities Your Kids Will Love

Summer is just about here! That means it’s time to start thinking about what  adventurous and fun family vacations you are going to plan for this summer. I’m not sure about your kids, but mine are happy with with just about going anywhere. We’re a family on a very tight budget (always have been) so we haven’t gone to fancy places like Disneyland. It seems like everyone and their mother have been to the land of Disney and sometimes I feel like we’re the only ones who haven’t. Let me know if I’m wrong. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about a few places we could take the kids this summer. This is what I’ve come up with:

  • My kids love Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. There is so much to do there. They have tons of animals shows including: birds, dolphins, sea lions, and tons more – but my daughter’s favorite show is Shouka the Killer Whale.

There are so many great shows you are going to want to see all of them. Besides the shows, there are many great animal activities you can visit. They are all educational also (how cool is that?) If you like roller coasters you’ll love their rides! My favorite rides are Monsoon Falls and White Water Safari – these are the two water rides and I love water rides! There are plenty of rides for the little kiddos too (even small toddlers). Besides all the shows, rides and the things that really take your energy, they have an area to just hang out and catch your breath equipped with things to keep the kiddos occupied while you rest.

While you are doing your planning, check out their events. They hold events for Health & Safety, Grad Night, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Fright Night plus many more. Check it out – you might just be in time for one! Also, right now is a great time to buy season passes. Season passes are only $49.99 – that includes unlimited visits, passes for friends and over $300 in discounts on food and fun. That price is good until May 31st! So hurry! You can even buy them online and print them. No waiting in those long lines. They also have monthly family plans.

  • In my area, the fairs are coming up all over the place. Our local county fair starts this week. Our neighboring town’s county fair starts next week. Our California State fair is in August. Fairs are fun; however, they can get a little costly if you don’t have a plan. Prices do vary on where you live so some of you might be able to go frugally. My kids love it. They have rides, games and of course cotton candy!

  • I’ve taken my daughter to Disney Princesses on Ice. She had a blast! They more "Disney’s on Ice" than  just the princesses to suit everyone. They have Finding Nemo, World’s of Fantasy and a few others. The tickets were reasonably priced and luckily it was only an hour away from where we live. Just a heads up, the souvenirs are expensive. Of course, my daughter had to have the $20 Aerial wand. It was completely worth it. I do recommend getting closer to the stage. We were pretty far up and we wished we had been closer. Visit their site to find shows near you and to watch a video on what you will see.

  • One of the greatest places (in my opinion) is San Fransisco, California. It is amazingly beautiful! There are so many things to do. There are so many places to visit including: Aquarium of the Bay, Pier 39 (where there are so many things to do I can’t list them all here – check out their site) and you can even take an Alcatraz Cruise. I came across a great website that covers everything for a trip to San Fransisco from what to do, where to eat, where to stay and even where to shop! The website is called Only in San Fransisco.

  • Last but definitely not least, is Reno, Nevada. Yes, I know what you might be thinking; however, Reno is not only for gamblers. My kids love it. As a matter of fact, my daughter was willing to give up her Girls Scout trip to Six Flags this weekend to be able to go to Reno. (No worries, she will get to do her Girls Scout trip this weekend and Reno at the end of summer). Anyway, the kids love the lights of the city and Circus Circus, of course. At Circus Circus, they get to play games, earn tickets and redeem those tickets for prizes (which range from candy to video game systems).

Reno has many things to do besides visit casinos and play games all day. Visit Reno Tahoe is an awesome site that can point you in the right direction for special event dates, family activities, camping, weddings and there are many more! While we were in Reno we visited the Fleischmann Planetarium & Science Center where we watched a star show in a dome theatre – they show this daily. We also visited the National Automobile Museum where we had lots of fun. They had a car of Elvis’ there! There’s even an area where you can take pictures and they even have props!

Aside from all the wonderful things to do in Reno, if you go during the right time of year, you can even catch some fallen snow. When we went there wasn’t snow downtown Reno (well small bits on the rooftops) but there was snow on the outskirts of downtown Reno and along the highways. We decided to stop and have a little fun in the snow.
