Spring Forward | Smart Safety Checks during Daylight Savings

It’s that time of year again – time to Spring Forward by setting your clocks ahead one hour. One thing I like about springing our clocks forward is we will get one extra hour of daylight. This will allow us to take the kids out after dinner with permitting weather. It’s also a great time to do some safety checks around your house.

One thing we are always forgetting to do is to check the batteries in our home safety equipment. Think about it: if you have something that requires batteries to work properly and those batteries lose their power and die, it’s not really doing you any good.

That is why I decided to have a routine battery check when it’s Daylight Savings time. Surprisingly, we only have one clock that requires batteries, so that is pretty easy. Here are some other devices you might want to switch the batteries out of:

  • Smoke Detectors
  • Carbon Monoxide Detectors
  • Window/Door Alarms
  • Clocks
  • Flashlights
  • Emergency Radios

Changing the batteries in our smoke detectors is something we always do during Daylight Savings. It is a great time to check them because we are already taking our clock off the wall the set it back and we might as well keep working our way throught the house.

Our family is the most important thing in our lives. Most everything that would help us in an emergency or if a dangerous situation arrives, requires batteries. When you think about it, batteries could make or break a situation. If your batteries are dead in your smoke alarm and a fire starts while you are sleeping, that is not good. Same with the alarms.

I know you might be bummed about losing an hour of sleep or however all that works (I’m one of those people who just can’t grasp the whole ‘losing or gaining’ aspect of it. Don’t get me started.) Let’s make this a positive thing. Set up a routine to check your batteries. Be sure you make a list of which batteries you will need to replace them all, that way you can have them ready. In our situation, we only needed a few 9-volts. We trust all of our battery operated devices with Rayovac

Right now Rayovac has a great deal going on for Daylight Savings. If you buy two packs of Alkaline 9V packs, you can get two Heavy Duty 9V packs for free! That is awesome! Just use promo code SAVINGS. This deal is good through March 17th, 2013 at midnight.
